- Spring Fling Radiates With Oklahoma Charm
By Christine Wilson
Several OKTESOL members around the state gathered for Tulsa’s yearly
Spring Fling on Saturday, April 25, 2009 at Northeastern
University’s campus in Broken Arrow. There were 70 members and
non-members attending including publishing representatives from
National Geographic/Hampton Brown, Bigbee Learning Resources,
Santillana USA, Follett Library Resources, Pearson Longman ELT, and
Know-Its Reading. In addition to these, Impact Software displayed
their products and conducted a session on its Dynamic English
program. Participants also enjoyed book give-aways from Townshend
Press and Corwin Press.
The morning activities radiated with Oklahoma charm as OKTESOL Board
members greeted everyone, as well as assisted participants with
classes and finding many helpful resources. Santillana’s
representative, Bill Dickenson from Dallas, commented, “OKTESOL
members were so gracious and welcoming that I thought I was visiting
someone’s home instead of a conference.” He added, “Tulsa is
definitely the friendliest conference I have been to so far, and I
plan to return for the fall conference in Edmond.” OKTESOL Board
members present at the Spring Fling included Christine Wilson,
President; Laura Grisso, Vice-President; Rus Kiser, TESOL Liaison;
Dan Rueckert, CALL Chair; Margy McClain, Newsletter Editor; and Mark
Hamilton, Treasurer. Members were also joined by former Board
members, Rob Griffin, Tom Rowe, and Desiree Howard Jang.
Northeastern University catered the event, and participants were
able to enjoy refreshments throughout the morning while visiting
with friends, colleagues, and other OKTESOL members. OKTESOL Spring
Flings are not only a time for learning and sharing one’s knowledge
about ESL, but they are known for bringing old friends and
colleagues together and introducing new participants.
